Questions and Answers About Consumer Choice  The purpose of consumer choice is to give cardholders who pay with co-badged payment cards, such as BankAxept and Visa, the opportunity to choose which payment network is used for a transaction. Consumer choice is a functionality that will become available through software update 2.60.0 on selected payment terminals.

We have compiled a list of frequently asked questions and answers about consumer choice. Further down this page, you will also find illustrations showing how the payment flow will look after the update.

What is consumer choice, and why is it being introduced?

Cardholders using co-badged payment cards will have the option to choose which payment network is used when making a payment. The software update ensures that payment terminals comply with the recommended industry standard developed by BankAxept and Visa, while also supporting compliance with the EU Interchange Fee Regulation (IFR 2015/751).

The regulation is intended to increase transparency and enable customers to make an informed choice of payment network. The software update will be made available during autumn 2026.

How does consumer choice work in practice?

Below are examples of different payment flows for the various terminal types.

What does this mean for merchants and cardholders?

Merchants can continue to configure their payment terminals to use a specific payment network as the default option. At the same time, cardholders using co-badged payment cards must be given the opportunity to override this selection if they wish to do so. If they do not want to make an active choice, they can pay as usual.

Does this apply to all merchants?

Yes. The update applies to all merchants using terminal models that support the new functionality, regardless of industry or business size.

Which payment terminals are included in the update?

Software version 2.60.0, which supports consumer choice, will be available for the Viking Tetra, OnePA Tetra, and SmartPOS terminal families, including the following payment terminals:

SmartPOS

  • SmartPOS N950

  • SmartPOS P300

Viking Tetra

  • Desk3500

  • Lane3000

  • Lane3600

  • Link2500

  • Move3500

Important note: If you use the Lane3600 terminal model, you must first ensure that software version 2.52.0 is installed before installing the latest software version 2.60.0

OnePA Tetra

  • Self2000

  • Lane3000

  • Lane5000

The software update does not apply to the Self4000. The software update will be made available automatically by Nets. Once the update has been released, you can either manually trigger the software download or allow it to download automatically after the terminal has processed a transaction. The consumer choice functionality will become active during autumn 2026 once the software update has been installed on the payment terminal. We recommend that you monitor your terminals to ensure they receive and install the new software version.
